Questions About Safari from Zanzibar

“Most parks on the Tanzanian mainland can be accessed with short flights from Zanzibar, though you might need to change planes in Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

If I could choose only one area of Tanzania for a safari from Zanzibar, it would be the northern circuit. This region includes the top picks of Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. These Parks are nearby and are excellent wildlife destinations if you have the time. To visit all four parks, you would need at least 5 days.

Another option for a safari from Zanzibar is to head south to the wildlife-rich Nyerere National Park, known for its diverse landscapes and abundant elephants and lions. Adding Nyerere to your trip would require at least 3 additional days.”

“The time to spend on a safari from Zanzibar depends on how much time you get and the park you visit. If you have only 3 to 4 days, it’s best to focus on one park, such as Nyerere or the Serengeti.

For every additional couple of days, you could include another park or two, like Ngorongoro and possibly Lake Manyara in the north, or Mikumi in the south. With 10 days available, you could either complete the Northern safari circuit or visit three or four parks in Tanzania’s southern region.

Discussing combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar packages with your operator is advisable, as many visitors to Zanzibar also explore the mainland. For a more affordable safari, try to minimize the number of flights within the mainland.”

“Yes, It is possible to combine a Safari trip to the Serengeti with a visit to Zanzibar, and many tours offer this option. Typically, this involves a flight from Zanzibar to Arusha in northern Tanzania, followed by another flight from Arusha to one of the airstrips in the Serengeti. Alternatively, you can drive from Arusha to the Serengeti, enjoying attractions like Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater along the way, though this will take extra time.

The Serengeti is worth visiting and is one of my favorite parks in Africa. The wildlife is amazing, especially during the great wildebeest migration, which can be observed at various stages from January to August or September. However, any time of year is excellent for wildlife viewing in the Serengeti, where you can see big cats, elephants, and many other species.”

“Your safari from Zanzibar will almost certainly involve a flight. Although there are boat connections between Zanzibar Island and the mainland (Dar Es Salaam), they are much slower and less convenient for those heading to Tanzania for a safari.

After flying from Zanzibar to the mainland, typically to Arusha or Seronera airstrip in Serengeti, you may take another flight from these airports to your chosen national park.

While flying is more expensive than driving, it saves valuable holiday time for the safari itself rather than traveling to the destination. Additionally, air transfers offer incredible views, making it feel like a scenic flight. There’s something special about landing deep in a national park surrounded by wildlife.”

“Calculating the cost of a Zanzibar to Tanzania mainland safari involves many variables. Generally, you can expect to pay at least $300 per person per day, with prices for more expensive Safari packages being three times that or more.

Several factors contribute to these differences. Accommodation is one significant factor: luxury tented camps are much more expensive than budget camping safaris. The number of flights you take also affects the cost. Also number of days on safari, the season (high-season prices can be double those of the low season), and the type of safari (private safaris are more expensive than group safaris).”

“A classic wildlife safari is not possible on Zanzibar Island. While there are wildlife parks on the island, they are more like zoos and don’t offer the same experience as a true safari in one of Tanzania’s parks.

If you want an authentic safari experience while in Zanzibar, let us know, and will suggest possible options. We can suggest parks to visit on the mainland and what you might see there. Before this conversation, do some research and have a clear idea of the animals you’d like to see. For big cats and elephants, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Nyerere are excellent choices.

If you’re interested in tracking chimpanzees, following in the footsteps of Jane Goodall, then Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks in the far west of the country should be on your list.”
