White Sand Beaches

The beautiful island of Zanzibar found on the coast of East Africa, known as the Spice Island, is overflowing with culture and history, seemingly at odds with its idyllic geography of white-sand beaches with palms swaying lazily in the sea breeze. Zanzibar is a fantastic place to explore as well as a wonderful place to relax and unwind.

The west coast is dominated by the port city of Stone Town, and while although the beaches of Mangapwani, whose slave caverns may be seen at low tide, and adjacent Bububu are both less than half an hour distant by car, spending a night or two there is well worth the extra hour-long travel. Having said that, a day trip to the adjacent Prison, Grave, and Snake Islands, as well as the Chole Island Marine Park off the coast of Stone Town, is a welcome diversion from exploring the maze of narrow streets in the old city.

The Menai Bay Conservation Area, located on Zanzibar‘s south coast, is a sea turtle protection area for the endangered species that come to breed on the island. Roads to Zanzibar‘s southeast coast pass through the Jozani Forest, which is home to the island’s rare Red Colobus monkeys as well as a variety of other primate and small antelope species.

Best Time To vist Zanzibar

The dry season, which lasts from June to October, is the ideal time to explore Zanzibar. This also falls during Tanzania’s peak safari season, making the Zanzibar Archipelago a particularly popular post-safari destination. However, because of its consistent sunshine and warm Zanzibar climate, this tropical island is wonderful to visit throughout most of the year.

Climate & Weather

The months of June, July, August, September, and October are part of the long dry season, during which rainfall is relatively uncommon. It’s a great time of year to visit Zanzibar because the weather is typically fine, clear, and sunny. Temperatures vary greatly depending on altitude and location. The “short rains,” another rainy season, occur in November and December. These are much less common and lighter than the main rains.

If it has rained during the short rains, it usually dries up for a few months in January and February, Tanzania’s “short dry season,” before beginning to rain again in March.
