4 Questions About 4-Day Tanzania Safaris

“The cost of your 4-day Tanzania safari can vary significantly. Factors influencing the price include the season (with high-season prices potentially more than double those in low season), the specific parks you visit (as some are more expensive than others), and the type of accommodation you choose.

Additionally, the kind of safari you prefer—private or group, camping or luxury tented camps, fly-in or drive-in—will affect the overall cost. Traveling during the shoulder season can offer excellent value while still enjoying optimal conditions.

Budget Camping safaris in Tanzania typically start at around $100 to $150 per person per day, usually involving camping.”

“Seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) during your 4-day Tanzania tour will depend on your chosen destinations and a bit of luck. Ensure that your chosen locations have a healthy population of each of the Big Five. Some places claim to have all five but may have scarce sightings of species like rhinos. This is the case in the Serengeti and Okavango Delta, where rhinos are present but rarely seen.

Seasoned safari-goers often prefer to focus on other wildlife not included in the Big Five. The Big Five list, created by early 20th-century hunters, highlights the five most dangerous animals to hunt. However, there are many other fascinating species worth seeing, such as cheetahs, spotted hyenas, African wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, and more. Be sure to consider these animals when planning your safari.”

“There are many short tours available in Tanzania, giving you various options for your safari. To avoid moving lodges or campsites daily, I recommend either spending all three nights in one location or splitting them between two locations.

In the Northern safari circuit, you can easily visit two parks in a 4-day tour. You could explore the famous Serengeti National Park and stop by the Ngorongoro Crater along the way. Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks are both close to Arusha National Park, and either can be combined with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater in a 4-day safari.

If you push it, you can visit Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater in four days, but you’ll be covering a lot of ground. Visiting all four Northern circuit parks in four days is technically possible but not advisable.

Alternatively, you can explore southern Tanzania in a 4-day safari. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) or Ruaha National Park can each be visited as stand-alone fly-in safaris from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.”

“Yes and no. On one hand, you’ll end your 4-day safari tour wishing you could stay longer. But if I had only 4 days, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than on safari in Tanzania.

To make the most of your time, careful planning is essential for a 4-day safari tour. For a focused safari experience, it’s best to spend your time exploring just one or two parks, reserves, or safari destinations. Determine which animals and habitats you most want to see, then consult with several safari operators to choose your destination and plan your itinerary.

While you could try to visit a different destination each day on a whirlwind tour, you risk spending more time traveling between locations than observing wildlife.”
