Questions About Safari from Zanzibar

1. What parks are best for a safari from Zanzibar?

“Many Tanzanian mainland national parks can be reached with a short flight from Zanzibar, however, you may need to change planes in Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

If I could recommend visiting just one area of Tanzania on a trip from Zanzibar, it would be the north. This region is home to Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, which are my top picks.

These destinations are also close to Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, which are fantastic wildlife spots if you have the time. To visit all four destinations, you would need a minimum of 10 days.”

2. How many days for a Tanzania trip from Zanzibar?

“The length of your Tanzania safari from Zanzibar depends on the destinations you choose. If you have a duration of 3 to 4 days, it’s best to focus on the northern circuit including Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater.

For each additional couple of days, you can add another park or two. In the north, consider Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara, or in the south, Mikumi. If you can allocate 10 days, you could complete the Northern safari circuit or visit three to four parks across southern Tanzania.

Discussing combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar packages with us. Many travelers in Zanzibar also explore the Tanzanian mainland, so you’ll have plenty of options. One final tip: to keep costs down, try to minimize the number of flights within the mainland.”

3. Is a Serengeti safari possible from Zanzibar?

“Combining a trip to the Serengeti with a visit to Zanzibar is entirely feasible, and many tours offer this option. Typically, you will fly from Zanzibar to Arusha in northern Tanzania, then take a connecting flight to one of the airstrips in the Serengeti.

Alternatively, you can drive from Arusha to the Serengeti, allowing you to explore attractions such as Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater along the way, though this will add extra travel time.

The Serengeti is well worth the journey and is one of my favorite parks in Africa. The wildlife is incredible, especially during the great wildebeest migration, which can be observed at various stages from January to September. However, any time of year is excellent for wildlife viewing in the Serengeti, where you can see big cats, elephants, and many other species.”

4. Should I go on a fly-in trip from Zanzibar?

“Your tour from Zanzibar will almost certainly require a flight. While there are boat connections between Zanzibar Island and the mainland, they are much slower and less convenient for safari-goers.

Besides your flight from Zanzibar to the mainland (usually to Arusha or Dar es Salaam), you may also need a connecting flight to your chosen national park.

Although flying is more expensive than driving, it saves valuable holiday time, allowing you to spend more time on safari. Additionally, the flight offers breathtaking views, making the journey feel like a scenic adventure. There’s something special about landing deep in a national park surrounded by wildlife.”

5. How much does a Tanzania trip from Zanzibar cost?

“The cost of a safari from Zanzibar to the Tanzanian mainland can vary widely. On average, budget at least US$300 per person per day, with more luxurious options potentially costing three times as much or more.

Several factors influence these costs. Accommodation is a key factor—luxury tented camps are significantly more expensive than budget camping options.

The number of flights required also affects the overall price. Additionally, the length of your safari, the travel season (with high-season rates often being double those of the low season), and the type of safari (private safaris generally cost more than shared safari tours) all contribute to the total cost.”

6. Can you do a classic safari on Zanzibar Island?

“A classic safari experience isn’t available on Zanzibar Island. While the island does have some wildlife parks, they are more like zoos than the authentic safari adventures found in Tanzania’s renowned national parks.

For a true safari experience while you’re on Zanzibar, speak with your tour operator about options on the mainland. They can suggest destinations and activities based on your interests. It’s helpful to research and determine which animals you want to see before you talk to them.

If you’re interested in seeing big cats and elephants, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Nyerere National Parks are excellent choices.

Alternatively, if you’re inspired by Jane Goodall and want to track chimpanzees in their natural habitat, Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks in the far west of Tanzania should be on your list.”
