Questions About 3 Day Safari from Zanzibar

1. Which parks are typically visited on a 3-day safari from Zanzibar?

“The top choices for a 3-day safari from Zanzibar are Nyerere National Park (previously known as Selous Game Reserve) and Mikumi National Park, both in southern Tanzania. These parks are considered among the finest in East Africa.

You may have the opportunity to fly directly from Zanzibar to either park, or for Nyerere, to the airstrip located just outside its main eastern entrance. Another more economical option is to fly to Dar es Salaam and then embark on a driving safari to Saadani National Park, which is along the coast and close to the city.

Furthermore, since you’re flying, you can also reach several parks in northern Tanzania with a fly-in safari from Zanzibar. These could include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, or Tarangire National Park”

2. Is the south or north of Tanzania better for a 3-day trip from Zanzibar?

“Most travelers opting for a 3-day safari from Zanzibar tend to explore parks in southern Tanzania, like Nyerere and Mikumi National Parks, primarily because these destinations are more accessible. This allows for more time spent on safari rather than traveling, which is particularly valuable when you have only 3 days to enjoy the experience.

Saadani National Park is another option; while it may have fewer wildlife sightings, its proximity across the water from Zanzibar means reduced travel time.

Visiting northern parks on a 3-day safari is feasible, but it’s important to understand the logistics involved. Typically, you would need to fly from Zanzibar to Arusha and then take another flight to reach your chosen park. This usually results in longer travel times due to the need for multiple flights, which can eat into your safari experience.”

3. Are 3 days enough for a trip from Zanzibar?

“I believe that a 3-day safari from Zanzibar is the minimum duration needed to truly enjoy your experience. On a 3-day safari, you would ideally fly from Zanzibar to your chosen park on day one (preferably as early as possible) and return on day three (ideally later in the day).

This schedule allows for 2 nights and 1 full day in the park. You can expect to participate in at least four game drives, or three game drives and a boat trip on the Rufiji River if you choose to visit Nyerere. This timeframe also enables you to embark on game drives during the best times for wildlife viewing, as animals are most active and visible early in the morning and late in the afternoon. With three or four game drives planned, your chances of spotting the animals you’ve traveled so far to see are significantly improved.”

4. Are all 3-day safaris from Zanzibar fly-in safaris?

“Yes, a 3-day safari from Zanzibar include of flying or by boat to Dar es salaam. While Zanzibar does have some wildlife parks, they resemble zoos more than true safari settings where you can observe animals in their natural habitat.

The option with the least amount of flying is a visit to Saadani National Park, which is near Dar es Salaam. You could either fly or take a boat to Dar es Salaam and then drive to Saadani. All other safari options typically require a flight from Zanzibar to your chosen park, with Nyerere and Mikumi National Parks in the south being the most common destinations.

There are numerous tours and packages available, but a genuine fly-in safari involves flying directly to an airstrip located within or just outside the national park, where you will be picked up and transported to your accommodation. This is the standard procedure for most safaris departing from Zanzibar.

5. How much does a 3-day trip from Zanzibar cost?

“If you’re seeking an affordable 3-day safari from Zanzibar, a budget camping safari in Saadani National Park is probably your best option. You can expect to pay around $200 to $250 per person per day, which typically covers transfers, park entry fees, accommodation (including camping gear), meals, some drinks, guide services, vehicle use, and game drives. If you opt for a budget camping safari, be prepared to assist with some camp chores.

For a more upscale experience in northern parks, prices are $400 per person per day. However, this cost can double or even triple if you select high-end accommodations during peak season.”
